Oral Conscious Sedation in San Diego
A prescribed pill taken before your visit helps you arrive calm. Plan on a ride home.
Oral conscious sedation is a prescribed anti-anxiety pill you take before your dental appointment. By the time treatment starts, most people feel calm and drowsy, and many remember little of the visit afterward. You stay awake enough to breathe on your own and answer questions, and someone will need to drive you home.
At Sunrise Dental Arts, it sits in the middle of our three sedation dentistry options. It goes deeper than nitrous oxide but does not need an IV line like IV sedation. Dr. Andy Keith may suggest it if your anxiety is more than mild, if needles are part of what scares you, or if you have a longer visit ahead.
How Oral Conscious Sedation Works
The medication is usually a benzodiazepine, a class of anti-anxiety drug, prescribed in a dose chosen for you. You take it at a set time before your appointment, often about an hour ahead, so it is already working when you sit down. It lowers anxiety and makes you sleepy, but you can still respond when we talk to you.
A systematic review in BMJ Open describes oral sedation as one of the more accessible ways for dentists to manage anxiety in adults, with benzodiazepines among the most commonly used drugs. The same review notes its main limitation. Because the drug is swallowed, it can take longer to start working and its onset can vary from person to person. That is why timing your dose exactly as directed matters.
Planning Your Oral Sedation Appointment
Before your visit, we give you clear instructions on when to take the medication, what to eat or avoid beforehand, and which of your regular medications to take. Because the pill affects your coordination and reaction time, you will need a responsible adult to drive you to the office and take you home afterward.
By the time you are in the chair, you should feel noticeably calm. Local anesthetic still numbs the area we are treating, and our team checks on your comfort throughout. Once you are home, plan to rest for the remainder of the day and skip driving, alcohol, and anything that needs sharp focus until the next morning.
Meet the Team
Dr. Andy Keith and our team take the time to understand what worries you before any treatment is planned. Anxiety about the dentist is common, and we would rather hear about it early than have you push through quietly. As your Hillcrest dentist, we keep each visit calm and well organized.
You will know what is happening and why at every step. If something is not working for you, tell us and we will adjust, whether that means a short break, more numbing, or a different approach to sedation next time.

- Customized Treatment Plan
- Implementation of Treatment
- Aftercare & Maintenance Tips

Initial Consultation
We talk about what makes dental visits hard for you, then Dr. Keith examines your teeth, takes X-rays, and reviews your medical history and current medications to see whether oral sedation is a safe choice.
Customized Treatment Plan
Your plan spells out which treatment can be done during the sedated visit, about how long it will take, and what it will cost. You leave with instructions on when to take the pill and a reminder to line up a driver.
Implementation of Treatment
You arrive already relaxed from the medication. We numb the area being treated, keep an eye on how you are doing, and work at a steady pace while you rest.
Aftercare & Maintenance Tips
Drowsiness can last for hours, so rest at home with someone nearby for the rest of the day. We send you home with care instructions for the treatment you had, along with a number to call if you have questions.
Follow-Up
If your treatment needs a healing check or another visit, we schedule it before you leave. We can plan future appointments with the same sedation if it worked well for you.

Treatments Patients Often Pair With Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is most helpful for visits that feel stressful by nature or keep you in the chair for a while.
- Tooth extractions. Removing a tooth, including wisdom teeth, is one of the most common reasons patients ask for sedation.
- Root canal treatment. If you expect the worst from a root canal, being drowsy and relaxed can change how the visit feels.
- Crown preparation. Preparing a tooth for a crown takes several steps, and oral sedation makes the longer appointment easier to sit through.
- Several treatments at once. If you need a few things done, oral sedation may let us finish more in one sitting and cut down on return trips.
Any treatment that makes you anxious is worth raising. Dr. Keith will tell you whether oral sedation makes sense for it or whether a lighter or deeper option would work better.
Oral Sedation Questions
When Do I Take the Sedation Pill?
You take it at the time Dr. Keith gives you, often about an hour before your appointment. Follow the timing exactly, because taking it too late or too early can change how well it works.
Will I Remember the Procedure?
Many patients remember little or nothing, but it varies from person to person. Even when parts of the visit are remembered, it usually feels calm and seems to pass quickly.
Can I Drive After Oral Sedation?
No. The medication slows your reflexes for hours, so a responsible adult must drive you to and from the office. Avoid driving until the next morning.
How Is Oral Sedation Different From IV Sedation?
Oral sedation is a pill taken before your visit, so there is no needle for the sedation itself, but the dose cannot be adjusted once it is taken. IV sedation goes through a small line and can be adjusted during treatment, which makes it the deeper and more adjustable option.
Can I Take My Regular Medications Before Oral Sedation?
Tell us about every medication and supplement you take. Some are fine to take as usual and some may interact with the sedative, so Dr. Keith will tell you exactly what to take on the day of your visit.

Oral sedation takes a little planning, so it is best to ask before your appointment rather than at it. We are in-network with Delta Dental and can bill most other PPO plans out-of-network. We also offer financing through Cherry and CareCredit. Request an appointment or call (619) 291-2980 and let us know you would like to discuss sedation.
