An adult woman sits in a dentist's clinic wearing a nasal mask to inhale nitrous oxide. Dentist fear concept. Feeling of relaxation with laughing gas.

Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild sedative you breathe through a small mask over your nose. Within a few minutes most people feel calm and a little detached, while staying awake and able to talk. The effect fades shortly after the gas is turned off, which is why it is the lightest of the three sedation options at Sunrise Dental Arts.

It suits patients whose nerves are real but manageable, such as someone who tenses up at the sound of the drill, dreads the numbing shot, or gags easily. Because it wears off quickly, you can usually go back to work or drive yourself home after your visit. Dr. Andy Keith can often add it to routine care, from a dental cleaning to a porcelain crown.

How Laughing Gas Works

Nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a soft nasal mask while you breathe normally. We start at a low level and adjust it until you feel relaxed but still present, then turn it down or off whenever you need.

A 2023 overview in the National Library of Medicine lists its main benefits as reduced anxiety, mild pain relief, and some amnesia, and notes that it can raise a patient’s pain threshold. It does not replace local anesthetic, but it can make the numbing injection and the rest of the visit easier to sit through. At the end, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to clear the gas.

When Nitrous Oxide Is a Good Fit

Laughing gas works best for mild to moderate nerves and for visits where you want to stay alert enough to talk and leave on your own.

Cleanings, Exams, and Fillings

Some people feel their pulse climb at a routine dental exam. A low dose of nitrous oxide can take that tension down so the appointment feels ordinary instead of stressful.

Longer Cosmetic and Restorative Visits

Appointments for teeth whitening, dental bonding, or crown preparation can mean a long stretch in the chair. Nitrous oxide helps that time pass more comfortably, especially if you find it hard to sit still.

A Strong Gag Reflex or Fear of Needles

Many patients find their gag reflex calms down with nitrous oxide, which helps with impressions and work near the back of the mouth. It can also ease the anxiety around the numbing injection, which is often the part people dread most.

If your fear is severe or your procedure is long and surgical, a deeper option such as oral conscious sedation or IV sedation may serve you better. Nitrous oxide may also not be recommended in some situations, such as pregnancy, certain lung conditions, or a blocked nose, so we review your health history first.

Our Sunrise Dental Arts Care Process

Initial Consultation

We start by listening. Dr. Keith examines your teeth, takes X-rays, and asks about your health history and what has made past visits hard, so we know whether nitrous oxide is a good match for you.

Customized Treatment Plan

Your plan lists the treatment you need, the order we suggest, and where nitrous oxide fits in. We go over costs and insurance before you commit, and you can ask for laughing gas at the visits where you want it.

Implementation of Treatment

On the day of treatment, the nasal mask goes on first and the gas is raised slowly until you feel relaxed. Local anesthetic numbs the tooth, and you can raise a hand at any point if you need a break.

Aftercare & Maintenance Tips

After a few minutes of pure oxygen, most people feel like themselves again. You get care instructions for the treatment you had, such as when to eat after a filling, and you can usually get on with your day.

Follow-Up

We book your next cleaning or the next step in your treatment before you leave. If nitrous oxide made the visit easier, tell us so we can plan for it again next time.

What a Nitrous Oxide Visit Feels Like

Most people describe a light, warm feeling, sometimes with tingling in the hands or feet and a sense that the visit matters less than it did a minute ago. Some feel a little giggly, which is where the name laughing gas comes from. If it feels too strong, tell us and we lower it right away.

A light meal a couple of hours beforehand is usually fine, since a very full stomach can make some people queasy. When treatment ends, a few minutes of pure oxygen clear the gas, and you can typically leave without an escort. Our safe environments page explains more about how we keep the office comfortable.

Nitrous Oxide Questions

Will I Be Awake With Nitrous Oxide?

Yes. You stay awake, can talk with us, and can follow instructions the whole time. Nitrous oxide makes you feel relaxed and less focused on the procedure without putting you to sleep.

How Quickly Does Laughing Gas Work?

Most people start to feel it within a few minutes of breathing through the mask. We can turn the level up or down during the visit so you stay comfortable.

Can I Drive After Nitrous Oxide?

Usually yes. After treatment you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes, and once you feel back to normal you can typically drive yourself home or return to work.

Will Nitrous Oxide Numb My Tooth?

No. Nitrous oxide eases anxiety and offers mild pain relief, but the tooth is still numbed with local anesthetic. Many patients find the injection much easier to handle with the gas already working.

Is Nitrous Oxide Enough for Severe Dental Anxiety?

Sometimes it is not. For strong fear or long surgical procedures, oral conscious sedation or IV sedation may work better. Dr. Keith will help you choose the level that fits.
