What Is the Difference Between a Dental Bridge, Partial Denture, and Implants?

A missing tooth is more than just a problem for your smile. It also causes trouble with how you eat, speak, and interact with others. The longer you leave that gap without a solution, the more your surrounding teeth and jawbone begin to compensate for it, and the more your confidence suffers as a result. If you’ve been weighing your options for replacing a missing tooth, three solutions tend to come up most often: dental bridges, partial dentures, and dental implants. Understanding how each one works is the first step toward making a decision that fits your health and your life.

At Sunrise Dental Arts in Hillcrest, our dentist, Dr. Andy Keith, have helped countless San Diego patients navigate this decision. With deep expertise in both restorative and cosmetic dentistry, our team takes the time to understand your goals, your anatomy, and your budget before recommending the next steps. Whether you’re missing one tooth or several, we offer all three of these solutions and the knowledge to match you with the right one.

How Each Option Works

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that literally bridges the gap left by one or more missing teeth. The false tooth, called a pontic, is anchored to the natural teeth on either side of the space, which are prepared and fitted with crowns to hold the bridge in place. Once cemented, a bridge is permanent and not removed for cleaning. It restores function and appearance effectively, though it does require altering healthy neighboring teeth. Bridges are often a strong choice when the adjacent teeth already need porcelain crowns or have existing restorations.

Partial Dentures

A partial denture is a removable appliance that replaces one or more missing teeth using a gum-colored acrylic base and artificial teeth, held in place by metal or acrylic clasps that attach to your remaining natural teeth. Unlike a bridge, partials are taken out for cleaning and at night. They tend to be more affordable upfront and require no or minimal alteration to neighboring teeth, making them an accessible option for patients missing teeth in multiple areas of the mouth. That said, they can feel less stable over time and may need adjustments as the jawbone gradually changes shape beneath them.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are the most comprehensive long-term solution available. A titanium post is surgically placed into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration. Once it has healed, a custom crown is attached to the top of the implant. Since the post acts as an artificial root, implants are the only option that actively stimulates the jawbone and prevents the bone loss that occurs after tooth loss. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, tooth loss and bone resorption are closely linked, which is why preservation of bone structure matters. Implants look, feel, and function like natural teeth, and with proper care, they can last a lifetime.

Which Option Is Right for You?

The right choice depends on several factors including the number of teeth missing, the health of your surrounding teeth and gums, your bone density, and your budget. Bridges are a reliable mid-range option that can be placed more quickly than implants, while partial dentures offer flexibility at a lower cost. Implants represent the gold standard in tooth replacement, but they do require adequate bone structure and a healing period of several months.
